The McDowell DNA
Research Project
1st Reunion for the DNA Participants
was held July 6th thru July 9th in
Asheville ,N.C. 2006
Check back often for updates
|
We had a
wonderful Reunion in 2006, we spent a day researching at OBCGS. We
went to the Grandfather Mountain, Highland Games on Bus and toured four
McDowell Homes in 3 N.C. counties, We also helped in a small way to form a
family group to help to save the Pleasant Garden McDowell Home in McDowell
County. I am happy to report that the McDowell County News ran an article
on our visit, and we have seen some great progress in the saving of this
Important, North Carolina Home. We also had a wonderful dinner on the
Grounds at the Smith McDowell House in Asheville, and came along side
their efforts to keep the Museum alive that has its roots in the American
Revolution, as well as one of the Hero's of the Kings Mountain battle, and
to North Carolina History... IN general we had a blast meeting each other
and sharing, we formed some really tight bonds, that have long outlasted
2006
|
|
We are making
great progress with the DNA matches. McDowell families are finding their
connections all over the Globe. During our first 3 years we seemed to be
gathering members, and not seeing much from the testing, but now the
results and matches are coming in like Gangbusters. We must have
passed some mystical point in the Number of folks in the Project . At any
rate the folks joining now are all getting matches to others in the
Project and we are busy working to connect our Documented Genealogy, and
our DNA and This is where it can be very interesting.

Asheville, NC, Recreation Park –

The gathering will take place at Shed #2
(at the bottom of the hill near the swimming pool)
Time: 10 AM - 3 PM

The reunion
honors the descendants of Marmaduke Lamb and his wife Orpha Rollins, who
relocated from Randolph County, NC, to Greene County, TN in the early
1800's. From there, many of their descendants migrated into Western North
Carolina in the years immediately following the American Civil War. The
reunion also honors the descendants of Elias and Sarah Morris of
Montgomery County, NC, and their sons who served the Confederacy (Zebedee,
William, Larkin). Zebedee and William relocated their families to
Buncombe and Madison County, NC, just prior to the Civil War. This is not
the Elias Morris who migrated to Kentucky. This Elias Morris died 30
August 1853 in Montgomery County, Pee Dee District. |

The
Riverview Community Center (formally Riverview Elementary/High
School) is located along the North Fork New River with a beautiful
boardwalk right along the river with large grassy areas. The New
River was designated as one of the 10 National Heritage Rivers in
the nation. |
| |
|
The
Center is located in the middle of ROARK Country. The Roarks were
here before the
American Revolution and many of them were involved in the battle of
Kings Mountain. This battle destroyed Major Ferguson’s British Army,
marking the beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War. |
|
|
|
Many
descendents of these valiant pioneers still live in the area today.
Charles Roark came to this area mid to late 1700’s. He settled only
a few miles away from the Community Center. The foundation of his
original log home still remains on the original site located on Peak
Mountain. The Charles B. Roark log cabin will be open for touring
starting around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday June 24, 2007. While at
the home you may get some history about who built the house and how
it has been passed down through the Roark line to its present owner,
Chris Taylor. From the house, some may want to hike the challenging
way nearly 1/2 mile to the Roark Cemetery. The usual route will take
you near the homeplace of Charles and Abigail Roark. Some steps and
foundation are still visible. Bring a jug if you want to take home
some fresh mountain spring water. |
| |
|
Roark descendants and allied families are invited to renew old
friendships and gain new ones while participating in our reunion,
auction, lunch and Roark Cabin Tour. In addition, our plans this
year include a fun filled Roark Genealogy Family History Day in West
Jefferson, NC at the Ashe County Public Library Heritage Room.
|
The Roark Recipe book with recipes
furnished by many reunion members has
been published. It can be purchased at the reunion.
We will also have Roark reunion shirts
and caps.
The Riverview Community Center is located at 11719 NC Hwy 88, Creston, NC.
From Jefferson, NC, it is approximately 15 miles from the intersection of
State Hwy. 88 and US 221. From Trade, TN, take TN Hwy 67 to NC Hwy 88 for
approximately 15 miles. Please contact us for a map or more details.
Please pass this
information along to other interested Roark kin

keeping the Roark families alive
